Under this agreement, the MCIA will coordinate input from NJ TRANSIT, AMTRAK, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), Middlesex County, and the local developer. In 2020, the MCIA officially entered into this partnership with NJ TRANSIT through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which permits the MCIA to serve as the project manager overseeing the design and construction of the project. The New Jersey State Legislature allocated $50 million for the train station project through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund (NJTTF) and in late 2019, the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) was tasked with managing the project, a first-of-its-kind partnership between NJ TRANSIT and a county. The North Brunswick Train Station will bring a new train stop to Middlesex County along the Northeast Corridor, providing numerous benefits, including substantial relief to one of the state’s busiest rail lines, reducing traffic along Route 1, and attracting new revenue to the region. One hundred townhome residences at The Heights at Main Street were built and are fully occupied. The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel opened in 2019. Panera Bread also held a grand opening in 2017. The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille opened in 2017, becoming its first location in New Jersey. Grand openings for Costco and Target were held in 2014. The mixed-use development will feature residential living units, retail stores, commercial office space, restaurants, and a hotel. Main Street North Brunswick, a transit village, is under active and continuing construction along Route 1 North on the former 200-acre Johnson & Johnson property.
